On Memory

Why is memory such an elusive concept? Following the creation of my zine On Archetypes, I felt inspired to continue the series with a zine discussing memory.

I wrote and designed each page, aiming for a chant-like, transendent text that was informative, inspiring, and haunting. Each chapter reads like a Truism; they cannot be denied and require further exploration.

I first had the idea for this zine while listening to a chapter of Amanda Montell’s audiobook, The Age of Magical Overthinking. In this chapter, she discusses nostalgia, and she quotes this beautiful line from Ursula K. Le Guin’s book, Tales from Earthsea:

“Past events exist, after all, only in memory, which is a form of imagination. The event is real now, but once it’s then,
its continuing reality is entirely up to us, dependent on our energy and honesty.”

This quote really planted a seed in my mind–what is memory, and how does it impact our reality? Are our lives based on collective memories? Are dreams a type of memory? I aim not to answer these questions but to ponder them further, using rhythmic incantations, imaginative prose, and some factual information.

This was a passion project, combining a few different interests of mine: editorial design, which I want to do more of, and writing, which I have been doing more of. I feel I need to note that I used free images sourced from Unsplash, fonts from Pangram Pangram, and ChatGPT to help source factual information and edit errors.
